Responding to students' essay

For this task, I was asked to correct an essay on ' A Scary Experience' by a low proficiency student. Since it was my first time doing this, I was a bit confuse on what I should do.
After read through the whole passage, I decided to give the essay six out of ten marks. Although there were plenty of errors in it, I think it was still good that I can follow the flow of the story written. I find that this particular student is using a direct translation from mandarin to write most of the sentences in his essay. There was some time when I will have to guess the meaning of his sentences. Besides that, he/she was facing problems on the punctuation. He/she seems confused on how to use commas and fulls stop, not to mention the capital letters too. His/Her sentences ended up joined together and not well constructed. But however, I believe he/she can improve on his writing if there is action taken.
In order to overcome the problem, I will look up for more exercises on punctuation for the student. But I will explain on his/her mistakes so that he/she can have an idea on what should be done to improve.

* example : I with my friends snow and Elva went to theme park_ we had a very nice and scary day.

“INTEGRATING TECHNOLOGY IN TEACHING WRITING”

Write an article on the topic 'integrating technology in teaching writing'. It can be anything related to the slides, own opinion, how you would use it in future.

Nowadays, most of the schools are acquiring computers and internet in a rapid rates. In my opinion, the main idea behind the desire to use technology in teaching writing is not only to teach the students how to access their teaching materials on the Internet and the World Wide Web, but also to train the students how to eectively explore the Internet to search for needed information. They can search anytime and anywhere as long as they can access to the Internet. Teacher can share links and information from the internet to guide the students in their writing. Other than that, teaching writing using web technology provides various new learning environments where students can expand their understanding and challenge themselves in their writing. It also provides the opportunity for communication between students with peers and teachers to influence their interest in positive ways. However, I think learning using technology in the classroom is a time-consuming endeavour. Students have to master the basic knowledge of technology before they can start using it. Most of the children are becoming exposed to technology at such a young age, and in some cases the students know more about the technology in the classroom than the teacher does; this may be beneficial at times, however teachers must strive to stay updated on technology as well and not just depend that students will know everything.
Technology is coming whether teachers and classrooms are ready or not. Realizing that technology is an advantage is giving students a gift if we let the power of technology in the classroom reach it’s fruition.

Grading time~

In this task, we were required to grade a written essay in groups. After read through the passage, Fatin Salbiah and I had agreed on giving the student 9 marks out of 20, which means we failed him. We had decided on that mark because we find it difficult to understand few sentences in the passage. In addition, we have to relate ourselves to most of the story to get the entire picture in it. For me, I have to read several times on the essay to get the flow of the story as he was using limited vocabulary and plenty of grammatical errors not to mention the spelling. Moreover, most of the sentences were translated from mandarin. However, after listening to what Miss Yoon had commented, we were not supposed to fail the student's essay as long as we can understand the flow of their story based on the title although there were junks of errors in it. Through this task, I find it was actually quite challenging for teachers to do grading because there are more aspects to be concern at rather than the grammar or vocabulary itself.

~Cut and Paste~

During this time, Miss Yoon told us that we were  going to do some fun activity outside the class. We were informed to bring our own scissors and glue earlier before the lesson while newspapers  will be provided by Mr. Lau Ngie Cheon. We were so excited  at that moment.
In this activity, we have to find the words that Miss Yoon mentioned from the newspapers and cut it out. We have to run for a distance to paste our searched words on a piece of paper. This activity requires fast reading skill and focusses in order to find the words.

After the word searching, we get back to the class and we were told to build sentences on the importance of preserving the sea using all the words that we have found.
Our team is only managed to find six words which are beach, rivers, clean, government, oil, and community. These are our sentenses:

THE IMPORTANCE OF PRESERVING THE SEA
1) The community can enjoy the beauty of the sea./
The community can ensure the continuity source of proteins.
2) Clean beach can attract tourists.
3) We can save marine lives from the oil spills.

Integrating Social Networking Tools into ESL Writing Classroom
STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES

This article aimed to identify the strengths and weaknesses of integrating social networking tools(SNSs)  into ESL writing classroom and find the ways to plan SNSs activities for the students. Although SNSs is a medium for individuals to share their likes and activities with one another, teachers can employ that technological medium for teaching and curriculur planning. However, teachers should consider  and compare the cons and pros for using SNSs as well its applications.

Teaching writing online promotes the self confidence among students. This is also a sort of way for teachers to make sure that everyone is involved in the teaching and learning process.         Besides, teachers and students can interact among themselves with no stress nor involving face to face interactions. Students can improve their writing skills when receiving enough input such as notes and informations from SNSs. In addition, the study materials are able to be presented in more familiar and comfortable ways. By multimedia interaction, students can share pictures, videos and links but they are taking the responsibilities not to misused the opportunities given by posting inappropriate photos or videos. Students are also given the freedom to write their comments and sharing ideas for motivational purposes and improve their writing.

Despite the advantages, SNSs may cause distraction too. There is a stack of risk that teachers and students might breeding inappropriate relationships through SNSs. Besides that, the processes involving SNSs may consume lots of time and energy in order to obtain correct materials online. Moreover, learners might not satisfy with the outcomes after all hardworks had been done. Furthermore, we are facing the fact that not every people    have internet access especially in rural areas. Hence, the implementation of technology in teaching and learning process might face difficulties. Some people also find that reading materials online is tough as they are used to the book-centered approach. Furthermore, students are more keen to update their facebook or twitter statuses instead of doing the writing online. Nevertheless, students will put aside the thinking part in doing their writing because 'copy-paste' method is already making their lives easier.

Students should be confident in a way to improve their writing. Teachers can leave motivational comments after reading students' blogs or notes online. By doing this, students will be more encouraged to present better writings in the future. This is an excellence way to give the opportunity for students to gradually improve, rather than forcing them to hand in perfert works all the time. By implementing this method in teaching writing, both parties would be benefited and free of stress along the process.

My Experience:

Being a student is not really easy for me all this while. Students nowadays are facing more challenges    whether academically or mentally due to the changing of globalisation where technology is already a must in our daily lives. After reading this article, I believe that the idea of using SNSs in schools are rather irrelevant that it posses more cons than the pros.

The reason why I am certainly get doubted with the idea is that I have experience the difficulties in dealing with technologies, ever since I was not in university. Not every people especially those who are living in rural areas are exposed to the technology. They will face the 'technology shock', instead of cultural shock if this is really going to be done. The best example should be me. Meanwhile, we have to know the fact that not every houses are capable to have the internet access. These unlucky people will definitely struggling hard along the way to adapt to the challenges. In addition, the privacy matter between two parties are going to be affected if there were no certain rules and regulations being carried on.

Thus, I think the social networking system should just  better remained as socialising and interacting tools among people worlwides. By integrating this into the classroom will only create more chaos than contributing.
